Plant breeders still use knowledge about chromosomes, genetics and polyploidy to improve crops and garden plants. Janaki Ammal also argued that India's extraordinary plant biodiversity deserved to be studied and protected, linking genetics with conservation.

A Love of Plants
Janaki Ammal was born in Tellicherry, now called Thalassery, in Kerala, India, in 1897. She studied botany at Queen Mary's College and Presidency College in Madras at a time when relatively few Indian women were able to pursue university science. After teaching botany, she travelled to the University of Michigan in the United States. She earned a master's degree there in 1925 and later returned to earn her doctorate in botany from the University of Michigan in 1931. Her specialist interest became cytogenetics — the study of chromosomes and how they behave during inheritance.
Chromosomes and Polyploidy
Chromosomes carry genetic information inside cells. Most organisms have a characteristic number of chromosomes, but plants can sometimes have extra complete sets. This is called polyploidy. Janaki Ammal became an expert in studying chromosome numbers and polyploid plants. She investigated many species and explored how chromosome changes could affect fertility, size and other characteristics. Her careful cytological work helped connect genetics with practical plant breeding.
Sugarcane Research
From 1934 to 1939, Janaki Ammal worked as a geneticist at the Sugarcane Breeding Station in Coimbatore. She carried out pioneering cytogenetic studies of sugarcane and related plants, including hybrids between species and even between different genera. Her work improved scientific understanding of the complicated ancestry and chromosome behaviour of sugarcane. This knowledge contributed to the wider breeding programme seeking sugarcane varieties better suited to Indian growing conditions. Her contribution was part of a larger breeding effort rather than a single-handed creation of modern Indian sugarcane.
Plant Science in Britain
Janaki Ammal later worked at the John Innes Horticultural Institution in Britain. With geneticist Cyril Darlington, she co-authored The Chromosome Atlas of Cultivated Plants, published in 1945. It brought together chromosome information about a huge range of cultivated plants. In 1946 she joined the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley as its first female scientist. Her research included using colchicine to change chromosome numbers in plants. A Magnolia kobus cultivar at Wisley was later named 'Janaki Ammal' in her honour.
Back to India
After Indian independence, Janaki Ammal returned home and accepted a government role helping to reorganise the Botanical Survey of India. She became the first Director of the Central Botanical Laboratory of the Botanical Survey of India in 1954. She continued researching cytogenetics, medicinal plants, plant geography and India's rich flora at several institutions. Her scientific career ranged far beyond a single crop: she investigated many different plants and became an important figure in twentieth-century Indian botany.
Science and Conservation
Later in life, Janaki Ammal became involved in efforts to protect Silent Valley, a biologically rich forest in Kerala threatened by a proposed hydroelectric project. Rather than simply protesting, she wanted scientists to document the forest's botanical diversity and planned a chromosome survey of its trees. She died in February 1984, before Silent Valley was formally declared a national park. Her legacy therefore connects plant genetics, crop science, biodiversity and conservation.
