Growing Up in Virginia

Gladys Mae Brown was born on 27 October 1930 in Sutherland, Virginia, in the United States. She grew up on a small family farm in a rural community where money was tight and opportunities for a young Black girl were limited. From an early age she showed a remarkable talent for mathematics. Her teachers recognised her ability, and she worked hard at school, determined that education would be her way to a different life. She won a scholarship to Virginia State College, a historically Black university, where she studied mathematics and graduated in 1952. She later returned to earn a master's degree in mathematics in 1955, a rare achievement for any woman at the time, and rarer still for a Black woman in the segregated American South.

Work at the Naval Weapons Laboratory

In 1956, Gladys West was hired as a mathematician at the US Naval Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren, Virginia. She was only the second Black woman ever employed there in a professional capacity. Her job involved complex calculations for satellite tracking and the processing of data returned from early satellites. In an era before electronic computers were widespread, much of this work was done by hand or with early electromechanical calculating machines. She also learned computer programming as the technology evolved, becoming one of the early programmers of large mainframe computers. She spent the next four decades at Dahlgren, working on some of the most difficult mathematical problems in satellite geodesy, the science of measuring Earth's shape and gravitational field.

Modelling the Shape of Earth

Earth is not a perfect sphere. It bulges at the equator and is slightly flattened at the poles, and its surface is distorted by mountains, ocean trenches, and variations in gravity. To make satellite navigation accurate, scientists need an extremely precise mathematical description of this shape, known as the geoid. Gladys West contributed to the effort of building this model by processing enormous volumes of satellite data and writing the programmes that refined the calculations. In the 1970s and 1980s she worked on the Seasat radar altimetry project, which used a satellite to measure the height of the ocean surface, and her programming work helped produce an extraordinarily detailed model of Earth's shape. This kind of model is essential to GPS because the system works by measuring the time it takes signals to travel between satellites and receivers on the ground, and even tiny errors in the assumed shape of Earth translate into significant errors in position.

Her Contribution to GPS

GPS, the Global Positioning System, relies on a constellation of satellites broadcasting signals that receivers use to calculate their position. The accuracy of those calculations depends on knowing exactly where each satellite is and exactly what shape Earth has beneath it. The mathematical model of Earth that Gladys West helped to build and refine over decades provided a foundation for the precise satellite orbits and coordinate systems that GPS uses. It is important to understand that GPS was not invented by any one person. It was the product of decades of work by thousands of engineers, mathematicians, and scientists across many institutions. West was one of those mathematicians, and her specific contribution was the painstaking computational work that improved the accuracy of the geoid model used in satellite tracking. Her role went largely unrecognised outside a small community of specialists for most of her life.

Overcoming Barriers

As a Black woman working in mathematics and computer technology in mid-twentieth-century America, West faced both racial segregation and widespread discrimination against women in technical roles. She was frequently paid less than her white male colleagues and was often passed over for recognition. She persevered by focusing on the quality of her work and by continuing to learn new skills as technology changed around her. She eventually earned a second master's degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1978. Even after retiring in 1998, she continued her education, completing a PhD in Public Administration and Policy Affairs from Virginia Tech in 2000 at the age of 70.

Late Recognition

For most of her career, Gladys West's contributions were known only to colleagues in the defence and geodesy communities. Public recognition came late in her life. In 2018 she was inducted into the United States Air Force Space and Missiles Pioneers Hall of Fame, one of the highest honours for contributors to space and missile technology. Her story reached a wider audience through a biography written for the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and she received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including an honorary doctorate from Virginia State University in 2021. She passed away on 17 January 2026, leaving behind a legacy as one of the mathematicians whose quiet, meticulous work behind the scenes made the navigation technology that billions of people use every day possible.
