Max's story

Early Life

Born in Kiel, Germany, in 1858 to a family of scholars — his father was a professor of constitutional law. Planck showed talent in music and physics, and a schoolteacher told him that physics was essentially complete, with only minor gaps left to fill. He chose it anyway, later remarking that his adviser had warned him not to expect any major discoveries.

The Ultraviolet Catastrophe

By the 1890s, physics had a serious problem. The existing theory of radiation predicted that hot objects should emit infinite energy at high frequencies — the so-called ‘ultraviolet catastrophe.’ Every attempt to fix it using classical physics failed. Planck, working on black-body radiation in Berlin, was simply trying to find a mathematical formula that matched the experimental data, not to start a revolution.

The Quantum Leap

In December 1900, Planck found that the data could only be explained if energy was not continuous but came in tiny indivisible packets — quanta. The size of each packet was proportional to the frequency of the radiation, linked by a constant he called h, now known as Planck’s constant. He initially viewed it as a mathematical trick, a ‘lucky guess’ to make the equations work, and spent years trying to reconcile it with classical physics. But the quantum was real, and it changed everything.

Einstein and the Quantum

It was Albert Einstein, in 1905, who first took Planck’s quanta seriously as a physical reality rather than a mathematical convenience. Einstein used the idea to explain the photoelectric effect — light itself was quantised into particles called photons. Planck was one of Einstein’s earliest supporters, and the two became close friends despite living through some of the darkest years of German history together.

Personal Tragedy

Planck’s later life was marked by devastating loss. His first wife died in 1909. His eldest son was killed at the Battle of Verdun in 1916. Both of his twin daughters died in childbirth. His other son was implicated in the July 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler and was executed by the Gestapo in 1945. Through all of this, Planck, a deeply patriotic German, stayed in his homeland and tried to preserve German science from within.

Legacy

Planck lived to see quantum mechanics fully developed by a new generation — Heisenberg, Bohr, Schrödinger, Dirac — all building on the seed he had planted. He died in 1947 at the age of 89, having outlived most of his family and the Germany he had known. The Max Planck Society, successor to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes he once led, is now one of the world’s leading research organisations, with over 80 institutes and more Nobel Prizes than any single university. The constant h remains the fundamental number of quantum physics, defining the scale at which the classical world gives way to the quantum one.
